More Than a Job: Rowan’s Leadership Consultant Story

Rowan Dawson, Butler, is embarking on her second year as a Kappa Kappa Gamma Leadership Consultant (LC). As a Senior LC, she looks forward to being part of this team’s story. “I cannot wait to be their biggest cheerleader and someone they can trust when things get difficult,” she says. At the same time, she’s reflecting on what this job has meant to her.

This job has always been hard work, Rowan admits. It’s not your normal 9–5. Every week is different. Sometimes she’s giving educational presentations to a room of 400 women. Other times, she’s helping members navigate conflict and communication issues. “Helping Kappas navigate interpersonal relationship problems is very challenging, but it has also helped me grow in my relationships post-grad,” she says. It also reminds her why she’s doing this work.

It may be hard to believe, but confidence hasn’t always come naturally to Rowan. Her experience building confidence — and, yes, sometimes embracing the “fake it until you make it” energy — allowed her to really connect with a member who wasn’t having the best chapter experience.

Rowan was checking in, sharing how much Kappa has given her and what Kappa can give this member in turn. “During one of our conversations, she asked me how she can be as confident as I am and make people feel appreciated,” Rowan says. “This will be something that stays with me. I was candid and told her that sometimes I do have to fake it because it can be hard to earn the respect of others, but showing kindness and empathy has also gotten me a long way.”

Rowan knows what an honor it is to be trusted to mentor collegiate Kappas and help them find their confidence. Her goal is to remind them that they’re exactly in the right place and don’t need to change themselves for anyone else.

She plans to soak up every last second of her year as a Senior LC. And she knows that however niche this job may seem, it has given her the experience and skills to make her stand out in a professional setting.

As I begin to say goodbye to this experience, I am a changed person.

“As I begin to say goodbye to this experience, I am a changed person. I am no longer scared of what is to come — the unknown is exciting — and the opportunities to stay involved with Kappa are endless,” she says.

“A little over a year ago, I was so nervous about my future, and I now feel at peace knowing that I will always prioritize work that celebrates and empowers women! My moral compass is what I put at the forefront of my decisions, and working for Kappa helped me realize that I don’t have to give that up to have a successful career.”
