Over 6,500 people are hospitalized for substance abuse every day in the United States, according to the Salvation Army. That means every day over 6,500 family members are affected as well.
Cheryl Tuck-Smith, Wyoming, is one of the many mothers whose life was touched by a family member’s addiction. Her daughter was fortunate enough to find recovery after graduating from one of the Salvation Army’s rehabilitation centers.
Having seen the transformational power of the program, Cheryl stayed involved and helped launch a rehab program in Chico, California. Cheryl says she was inspired to do something to help people who are ready to change their lives.
Now, she oversees Grandma’s Jewelry Box, where she sorts through jewelry donations at the Chico Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Program. Cheryl and a group of volunteers look for items to sell in the area’s seven thrift shops. They’ve learned a lot about jewelry. They’ve learned to weigh and test items to sort the real from costume pieces and have invested in a microscope to look for markings that are hard to read with the naked eye.
Cheryl and her team of volunteers make a direct impact on the lives of those in need, and after increasing jewelry sales for a year, they hope to cover the cost of over 30 adults in the rehabilitation program.
Listen to more about Cheryl’s passion for volunteering below and dive deeper into how she’s making a difference in the Chico community.
