Frequently Asked Questions for Collegians

How do I join?
 
College campuses with fraternities and sororities have a governing body called Panhellenic. This group organizes activities including membership recruitment for all of us. So, start by contacting them. You can also contact the Greek Life office on your college campus or visit your school’s website to find out when the next Recruitment will be held.  
 
What does Kappa look for in a new member?
 
Our members come from many backgrounds and experiences, but they’re all friendly, smart, take-charge kind of women who want to experience personal growth and who care about others. If that’s you, then we should meet.

What about grades?
 
Well, you’ve come to college to prepare for life and that starts in the classroom. GPA matters. We require at least a “B+” average if entering from high school or “B-” average if you’ve completed a university or college term.
Is a potential new member required to get a reference to join Kappa Kappa Gamma?
 
No, but it can be very helpful in the membership recruitment process. Any initiated member may write a reference for you. Your teachers, your parents’ co-workers and your neighbors might be Kappas or know of a Kappa who would be willing to write you a reference. Undergraduates, however, may not write a recommendation for a potential new member at their own chapter. References are sent directly to the Membership Chairman at the appropriate chapter through our online reference system. To access your reference system, visit www.kappa.org/references.
 

Frequently Asked Questions for Alumnae

Who is eligible to join through Alumna Initiation?

Examples of members who join as alumna initiates include relatives and friends of Kappas who did not previously have the opportunity to join Kappa. University staff and active people within our communities are also great candidates for Alumna Initiation. Anyone who believes in our ideals of friendship, mutual support and lifelong learning are also encourage to apply!

I pledged a different Greek-letter organization when I was in college. Can I still apply?

As long as you did not initiate into another Greek-letter organization under the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) umbrella, you are eligible to apply for Kappa's Alumna Initiation. 

I attended a four-year university, but I left before I graduated. Am I still eligible to apply?

Yes! Kappa does not require graduation as a prerequisite for membership. Alumna initiates are required to have attended a four-year institution, just as is practice for our collegiate members. Candidates for initiation must be at least five years out of college.

I attended a two-year institution that didn't have Greek-letter organizations. Am I still eligible to apply for Alumna Initiation?

No. Currently, the National Panhellenic Conference Unanimous Agreements specifies members must be (or have been) matriculated at a four-year institution. In order to remain in compliance with the Unanimous Agreements, Kappa cannot consider women who are not alumnae of four-year colleges or universities. 

I know you have a GPA requirement for collegians, is a college transcript required for the application?

No. Although we do like to recruit academically successful collegians, we select our alumna initiates based on qualities not listed on a transcript. No need to submit anything related to GPA!

Where will I be initiated?

If accepted, you may choose to be initiated at a chapter of your choosing. Initiates who do not live close to a chapter or who have no direct connection with a chapter can choose to be initiated at the next Convention. This location changes every two years. 

There is a Kappa chapter at my alma mater, but I never joined while I was enrolled. Can I affiliate with that particular chapter?

Yes. If you have a connection with a particular chapter and are willing to provide your own transportation, you may choose the location of your Initiation should an invitation to membership be extended. 

An educational period was mentioned. What does that education entail?

The education process provides instructions on Kappa's history, values and procedures, just like the instruction our collegiate new members receive. It's modeled following Dream: A Guide for New Members, the keepsake book that is currently given to collegiate new members.
