Nominations and Elections

One of the most important responsibilities of membership is electing future leaders of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

About the Election Process

As we prepare for Kappa’s election of Fraternity officers and District Directors that will take place in the coming months, you’ll find important information about the process below. In 2022, the Convention body voted to change Kappa’s election of Fraternity officers and District Directors in two important ways:

  • The election will take place online.
  • The election will be completed at least eight weeks prior to Convention, providing time for the transition of Fraternity leadership.

These changes provide the opportunity for more delegates to participate in the election as it removes the requirement of attending Convention, which can be a barrier to some. Kappa has contracted a trusted and secure third-party election software company to host our election.

The electronic Fraternity officer and District Director election will take place in April. The credentialing process will begin in January, and credentialed voters will receive additional information via email, including instructions on how to securely cast their ballot.

What’s Staying the Same

Much of the Fraternity’s elections process will remain the same, including:

  • The election will be overseen by the Election Committee.
  • Voting delegates will have the ability to nominate additional candidates for a position.
  • Candidates must be qualified and eligible, according to the Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity Bylaws, Articles IV and VI.
  • The report of the election results will be shared with the membership.

About the Leadership Selection Committee Process

About Elections

Per the Fraternity Bylaws, Article VIII. Section 2. E, the following members are eligible to vote in the Fraternity officer and District Director election after they have been credentialed as delegates:

  • Fraternity Council members
  • District Directors
  • Chairs of standing committees
  • Content Directors
  • One delegate from each chapter
  • One delegate from each alumnae association

According to Fraternity Bylaws, Article V. Section 8, associations and chapters must be in financial good standing in order to vote.

A delegate is a person chosen to represent a group of people. For Kappa, this includes Fraternity leaders as well as individuals chosen to represent their chapter or association. The Fraternity Bylaws outline who is eligible to vote in the Fraternity officer and District Director elections. The credentialed delegate is the person who votes in the election, and in doing so, represents the interests of their group.

For chapters and alumnae associations, the President is typically the delegate. The delegate will be selected and confirmed through the credentialing process.

Members will receive information regarding the process via email, including an announcement when credentialing opens on KeyReports on Jan. 29. It will close on March 8 at 11:59 p.m. ET so the Fraternity may provide the list of credentialed voters to our election vendor in order to get delegates set up in their system.

Failure to properly credential a chapter or alumnae association delegate or meet the imposed deadlines for good standing will result in not being able to participate in the Fraternity officer and District Director elections.

Credentialing is the process that Kappa uses to identify and designate an individual to serve as a voting delegate. Part of that process includes verification of good standing, which is required to vote.

  • According to the Fraternity Bylaws, Article V. Section 8. B., chapters on Probation or Suspension are not eligible to vote. Chapters that are on Probation/Suspension as of March 8 will not be eligible to participate in the election. Chapters that are put on Probation between March 8 and April 15 will also not be eligible to participate in the election.
  • According to Fraternity Bylaws, Article V. Section 8. C., associations must be in financial good standing in order to vote.
  • Chapters and associations must have been financially up to date with the Fraternity by Jan. 26 in order to be in good standing to vote.

Failure to properly credential a chapter or an alumnae association delegate or meet the imposed deadlines for good standing will result in not being able to participate in the Fraternity officer and District Director elections.

According to the Fraternity Bylaws, the election shall be conducted electronically utilizing an online voting and election software application. The candidate for each officer and District Director position receiving the most votes shall be elected provided such candidate receives a majority of the votes cast for that position.

The 2024 Fraternity officer and District Director election will be taking place electronically this coming April. Kappa has contracted with a trusted, secure third-party election software company to operate the election.

Once the voting delegates are identified through the credentialing process, all credentialed voters will receive additional information on how to participate in the election. This will involve casting your ballot electronically during a set period of time. The election will be hosted on the election software vendor’s platform (not kappa.org) and will not involve downloading any software. The voting website can be accessed on any device that will connect to the internet.

The election will take place in April. In the event of a need for a run-off election, additional information will be emailed to credentialed voting delegates about how to participate in the run-off election. The election will be completed at least eight weeks before Convention.

Per the Fraternity Bylaws, an Election Committee comprised of nonvoting members appointed by Fraternity Council shall oversee and coordinate the election process in conjunction with the Executive Director. The Election Committee is a special committee and the current chair of the Election Committee is Katy Stovall, Drake.

Kappa has also contracted with a trusted, secure third-party election software company to operate the election.

Per the Fraternity Bylaws, the report of the election results shall be sent electronically to the membership within five business days following the close of voting and shall be published on the Fraternity website.

About Leadership Selection Committee

Per the Fraternity Bylaws, a member meeting all member standards and responsibilities, academic, financial and conduct, and not under any accountability outcome is a member in good standing and, therefore, eligible for any elected, appointed, or volunteer position within the Fraternity.

Individuals qualified for election to a District Director position or to Fraternity Council shall be alumna members who have formerly served the Fraternity within the past 10 years in any one of the following positions: 1) member of Fraternity Council; 2) Regional Director or Province Director; 3) District Director or Content Director; 4) Content Specialist; 5) chair or member of a Fraternity Standing or Special committee; 6) Fraternity Council Assistant; 7) Field Representative; 8) member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation Board of Trustees; or 9) member of the Fraternity Housing Corporation Board of Directors.

A member who meets the eligibility and qualifications as outlined in the Fraternity Bylaws may submit an application for District Director and/or Fraternity Council and will be considered a nominee.

An individual may also be considered a nominee if they were recommended by a member in good standing, accept the recommendation, and submit an application for District Director and/or Fraternity Council.

The LSC nominates one candidate for each Fraternity Council and District Director position based on recommendations received from members and application materials received from candidates.

Members are invited to:

Voting members elect Fraternity Council officers, including a President, four Vice Presidents and a Treasurer, as well as 14 District Directors. An electronic election will occur at least eight weeks prior to Convention. Convention 2024 will be held at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix from June 27–29, 2024. Newly elected leaders are installed and assume full responsibility at the close of Convention. All elected positions are considered vacant at the end of each biennium.

The Leadership Selection Committee (formerly the Nominating Committee) is formed out of a broad representation of the membership. This committee will serve from March 2023 through August 2024. The LSC is tasked with compiling and presenting a slate of officers for Fraternity Council and 14 District Directors.

The LSC slates one candidate for each Fraternity Council and District Director position based on recommendations received from members and applications and other materials received from candidates. Throughout the biennium, the LSC educates the general membership on the nominating process and encourages member participation in the process.

The Leadership Selection Committee Chairman and Vice Chairman, both of whom are appointed by Fraternity Council, serve as nonvoting members of the committee. The voting members consist of seven alumna representatives and seven collegiate representatives — one from each of the 14 districts. The Leadership Education and Development Committee receives and reviews applications to the Leadership Selection Committee and makes recommendations to Fraternity Council, who appoints the LSC members. Per the Fraternity Standing Rules, in reviewing the applications, consideration will be given to diversity in the composition of the committee by geography, chapter and association size, campus size and type, leadership qualities, experiences, commitment, and ability to consider the best interests of the Fraternity.
