Get Social in Houston!

(Friendship, Leadership, Sisterhood) Permanent link

The 2014 General Convention is only a few short weeks away, when more than 1,000 excited Kappas will be convening in Houston, Texas, for a few days of sisterhood, leadership, service and fun. We hope you will share your Convention experience on social media, and as always, we want to remind you that posts and photos should be appropriate and reflect Kappa Kappa Gamma and its members in a positive light.

Here are some tips and best practices for using social media during our time in Houston. We look forward to checking out your fabulous Facebook status updates, tweets and photos! See you there!

  • If you haven’t already, download the Guidebook app from the Apple store or Android Marketplace, and search for Kappa Kappa Gamma. You will be able to see the entire Convention itinerary, set your own personalized agenda for the events you want to attend, and even set reminders for yourself so you don’t miss anything! The app also links directly to Kappa’s Facebook page and Twitter and Instagram feeds. The most interactive part of Guidebook is the photo album, which allows any Convention attendee to take photos and add them to the album for others to see.

  • The official Convention hashtag is #KKGHouston. You can use it to search for the latest Convention news in Twitter, or tag your Convention tweets and Instagram posts. Remember, Kappa Kappa Gamma’s official Twitter feed can be found at www.twitter.com/kappakappagamma, and our Instagram account is www.instagram.com/kappakappagamma.

  • Remember that at Convention, as always, you are wearing your letters 24/7. Be sure to act appropriately at all times, and be courteous and kind to the hotel staff and the other guests to give them the best impression of Kappa. Though we will be more than 1,000 strong in Houston, we will not be the only guests at the hotel.

  • Do not use the hashtag #GKODB at Convention—or ever, for that matter. The Fraternity is aware of this hashtag, and though its intent is often to show Kappa pride, it comes across as mean-spirited and exclusionary in nature.

  • Do post Facebook status updates, tweet and post pictures on Instagram about the great stuff you are doing at Convention! Some examples:
    • Photos: Interactive activities during workshops (but please be aware of keeping your phone out of site when presenters are talking); pretty centerpieces at dinners and banquets; great things you bought at the Blue Owl Boutique; sisters singing Oh, Pat; the Parade of Flags on opening night; everyone’s cowboy attire during the Wednesday evening’s Regional Dinner; new friends you’ve made; attendees doing the Foundation Walk on Saturday morning; Habiteers Luncheon (for those who have attended 5 or more Conventions.)
    • Facebook statuses / tweets: Tidbits or great information gleaned from workshops and education sessions; inspiring quotes you hear from key note speakers at lunches; observations about the big picture of Kappa, and what Convention means to you; new ideas for your association or chapter.

  • Do not, however, take or post photos during the Opening or Closing Business Meeting, Memorial Service or Ritual workshop.

  • Please keep your phone out of site during workshops and business meetings, and turn the ringer to off or vibrate.

  • Above all, have fun, and share your great experiences of sisterhood, leadership and friendship with your followers and friends!
