Caroline grew so close to Kappa that her first job after graduation
was as a Kappa Kappa Gamma Leadership Consultant. We expected a lot of travel
with this new opportunity as a Field Representative, but nothing could have
prepared us for our apparently healthy graduate to be hospitalized in Iowa—miles
away from any sort of home.
The mobilization of the “Kappa Army” swiftly began with a
call notifying us of Caroline’s illness. What began as a sore throat led to an
infection that developed into Lemierre’s syndrome, a bacterial condition that
spreads to the bloodstream and can cause organs to shut down.
Traveling from Greenville, S.C., to Ames, Iowa, is no small
feat and Rick, Caroline’s father, couldn’t catch a flight until the following
day. But Caroline was not alone—a local Regional Director of Chapters spent the
night with Caroline and provided updates until he arrived. This was above what
we expected from Kappa, but what occurred during the next six days surprised
the whole family.
While one Kappa stayed by our daughter’s bed, another
transported us from the airport to the hospital; all while being armed with a
basket of goodies and providing multiple meals and gift cards to restaurants
throughout our stay. As Caroline’s twin brother, older brother and boyfriend
trickled into the airport, they all had who we came to call our “meals on wheels.”
Another local Kappa opened up her home to us and her
hospitality continued with bringing fresh-cut flowers from the farmers market
to the hospital. Kappa helped turn a scary situation into what we now lovingly
refer to as our family vacation to Iowa.
The support from Kappa was simply unbelievable. From the
constant vigil to moral support that aided Caroline’s recovery, we were blown
away. Our sincere thanks goes out to the entire organization. Would we
encourage other parents to support their daughter’s sorority involvement?
Without hesitation: YES!
We were satisfied with our vacation and Caroline is doing
just fine, too.
